Ioannina celebrates "Theofania".

Written by ioannart on January 6th, 2008

“Theofania” or otherwise “Ta Fota” is the selebration of the baptism of Jesus Christ. According to the tradition, every year at 6 of January, the Prist, after having blessed the waters, throws the holly cross in the sea or lake or river and young swimmers brave the cold and jump into the water to catch the wooden cross, which is a very great honer and blessing. If you enlarge the photo you can see the brave swimmers on the boat, a while before jumping into the lake.

This is the most wonderful thing I have ever seen. It makes me cry for real. Glad that the tradition is kept, and thank you for sharing virtually with us our blessings.
